Travertine is a stone full of natural voids, and that is precisely why it is used here. Where polished marble presents a flawless face, travertine is visibly porous and banded, so every piece differs and the material reads as geological rather than manufactured. Paired with solid walnut it gives a pendant made entirely from materials that show their origin.

The scale is the other decision. At six and a half centimetres across and twenty one to twenty four high it is deliberately small, which suits a pair hung either side of a bed or a run of three over a narrow table far better than one large shade would. The cord adjusts between one hundred and fifty and one hundred and seventy centimetres, so the drop can be set to the room rather than to the ceiling.
